Abstract: The design secrets behind the worlds first K-band data-analog converter (DAC) EV12DS460A from Teledyne e2v are presented.The reasons why new capabilities can emerge are avoiding established CMOS design principles and applying an ultra-high speed process. It is explained how a compact, single-core quantizer coupled with careful design choices leads to the breakthrough performance of EV12DS460A . Finally, it is shown that the delicate differences between wiring and circuit simplification are important factors to be considered in design.
